Santa Fe Chama Train Albuquerque




July 2nd - 5th, 2012
Day 1: Leave the Valley early to head for New Mexico. You will travel through the pastel hues of the Painted desert and also the Petrified Forest, an ancient forest turned to stone. Stop off at Tobe Turpen’s Trading Post in Gallup, New Mexico. This territorial style trading post is the center of trade for Southwestern and Native American crafts. As you continue your jorney to Farmington you will pass Shiprock, the 1700 foot eroded volcanic plume sacred to the Navajos. Geologists tell us the rock was formed 12 million years ago. Overnight in Farmington.
Day 2: Free continental breakfast at your hotel and then check out and travel to Chama where you will board the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad for a one way trip that winds through the San Juan Mountains. Your motor coach will meet you when you disembark at Osier Colorado. You will then head for Taos, New Mexico traveling the aptly named Enchanted Circle. Overnight in Taos. Breakfast Included.
Day 3: Afr your free continental Breakfast at your hotel you will have a city tour including the Taos Pueblo, the largest surviving multistoried Pueblo Structure in the United States, and the Taos Drum Factory whose drums go beyond traditional sound and style to provide a reawakening to the origooms of the North American drumming begun in this region 10,000 years ago. Continue your trip to Santa Fe stopping in the village of Tesuque for a visit to the Shidoni Foundry. This is one of the top fine arts foundries in the United States specializing in mold making. Overnight in Santa Fe. Breakfast Included - Special Fireworks at the Fairgrounds included tonight.
Day 4: Free continental breakfast at your hotel and then travel to Albuquerque for an adventure aboard the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, the worlds longest single span tram which will take you to the top of Sandia Peak. Here you will have a spectacular view of the area surrounding Albuquerque and the Rio Grande. You will then stop off for lunch (on your own) in Old Town Albuquerque before you continue to the Acoma Sky City which has been inhabited since before the twelfth century. In this unchanged ancient city, families live without benefit of running water, electricity, or most other conveniences we take for grnted. Then start for home via the Salt River Canyon and the copper mining town of Globe arriving in the Valley of the Sun around 11:00 p.m.
