THE DURANGO & SILVERTON NARROW GAUGE RAILROD September 7-10, 2010 THE FOLLOWING IS A PRELIMINARY ITINERARY SUBJECT TO CHANGE. FINAL ITINERARY WILL BE MAILED TO YOU ABOUT TWO WEEKS BEFORE DEPARTURE Day 1: Early departure, REVERSE PICK UP, .and travel through the woodland areas of Payson, Pine and Strawberry, Shiprock, Four Corners and on into Durango, Colorado. Overnight in the downtown area. HOTEL: HOLIDAY INN 2 NIGHTS Day 2: Today you will board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. You will travel by a coal-fired, steam powered locomotive on the same tracks miners, cowboys and settlers of the old west took over a century ago and disembark in Silverton. You will have time to explore the Victorian charm and unequaled beauty of the former mining town of Silverton. You will then come back via the “million dollar highway” to Durango for the night. Optional Cowboy Dinner $30.00 Day 3: This morning we will check out of our hotel and head for MESA VERDE—a very large and unique Indian Cliff Dwelling. We will spend several hours here and have time for lunch on your own . Early afternoon we will travel on to Chinlee, Arizona for the night—Holiday Inn Day 4: This morning we will have a FOUR HOUR JEEP TOUR DOWN INTO THE CANYON WITH A NATIVE GUIDE OF Canyon de Chelly. We will also have our lunch here ( on your own) . You will drive by the pastel hues of the Painted Desert and through the spectacular Salt River Canyon. This “Grand Canyon You Can Drive Into” is 2,000 feet deep, about 5 miles wide and the vertical-walled canyon winds for many miles with sedimentary rock layers visible from the road.
